Trend setting on world stationery day

Trend Analysis // stationery 16/17

This week we celebrate National Stationery week in the UK, with today being the second ‘world stationery day’- yes that is becoming a ‘thing’! Obviously we think it’s a great movement with the ambition of getting adults and children alike writing again, communicating by the written form as opposed to via our newly acquired digital world, not that that’s a bad thing, but there is still something quite special about receiving actual ‘post’ today, more so than ever before.

Today I went to the stationery show in London, there were very inspiring talks from Not on the High street and the trend analysis experts Scarlett Opus. What struck me with both talks, was the pure nature of stationery reaching out to individuals in such an emotionally engaging way in the retail market. Obviously here at Cutture that is what we are all about, our bespoke work doesn’t get more personal and tells everybody’s story, be it a couple or corporate brand, but it is interesting to see how this has moved into retail consumer’s homes as part of their buying.

Stationery goods are now a luxury commodity, but not necessarily in the monetary sense, they give us a moment for ourselves, to write, to plan, to dream to help realise goals. The mindfulness movement of this year and last is mostly consumer driven through stationery goods; who would have thought that stationery 10, 20 years ago, would actually make changes to people’s lives by encouraging them to be life affirming and proactive to make those changes!

The humble greetings card is now all about personalisation and slogans that inspire the recipient as they are now such important things to receive outside of the digital world. This is something we touched upon back in 2012, creating ‘story’ greetings cards much like our ‘your story‘ invitations, but have since struggled design wise to make it beyond this for the retail market wanting credibility in our work and so, we pressed pause for a few years to carry on focussing on our bespoke work. Happily we have now come up with a solution and will be launching it later this year,  it has taken us this long to make sure we get it right and it seems we were ahead of the ‘trend’ back then, but what we have learned is that this is not always a good thing!

Noting trends, what an interesting insight it was into finding out about how trends are realised, we have been self proclaimed in specifying we do not follow trends in our bespoke work, as it’s concept driven, however for retail that would be a naive approach to take. Looking at future trends is such an interesting sociological topic, to think what happens in politics, architecture, the environment all has such a massive impact on areas such as fashion and everyday products suddenly makes researching future trends very credible and interesting to boot. We will be doing a lot more of this and, happily what we have lined up for this year and next appears to be on the right track!

So for now, Happy World Stationery day and we are off to prepare our brief for our new retail designer who will be starting in May…exciting things a foot!
