Wording your invitations – in a voice of your own

Word It Your Way

The invitation is the first indication your guests will receive of the tone and style of your wedding. It is entirely your choice what style of wording you use,  from long-established formal arrangements, through to a more modern and informal approach. This guide contains some examples for you to tweak as much or as little as you wish to suit your individual voices.

Traditional

Invitations are often written in the third person from the point of view of those who are hosting the wedding, traditionally the bride’s parents. If following this theme, it is also customary for the bride’s first and middle name to precede the groom’s full name and title.

Contemporary

Nowadays, couples have the freedom of a colloquial voice in their invitations, a fresh take on the classical format and an indication of a more informal wedding. Anything goes, and however you would like to personally invite your guests to the big event is up to you. You’ll see the time, date and venue are still there, but adopting a popular shift from full names to first names and a lighter language.
